Mixed Media and 2D work
I have worked for many years using mixed media including found objects. Some pieces are cut, carved and assembled. Paint is mixed with sand, glue and many other materials to give interesting surfaces and enable low relief modelling. Found objects are sometimes used and I like to chose objects with little worth and alter or juxtapose them in such a way as to re-invent their meaning. In my opinion it is too easy to construct pieces with objects which are already intrinsically beautiful.
Pieces vary from portraits and landscapes to what I call memory aids or narrative pieces.
Ceramics
Over recent years I have become more interested in using clay and going back into making 3D objects to compliment my other work. Surfaces and texture remain very important and the forms are evocative of boats and often contain landscape or figurative elements. Fossilised forms develop on and in-between strips of clay which can hold surprises when heads or faces appear, in much the same way as in the low relief mixed media pieces.
Generally I enjoy the relationship between actual and the illusion of 3D. I enjoy complexity and hiding or disguising elements within pieces whether actual objects, visual symbols or modelled forms.
